Over at Post-Darwinist, journalist Denyse O’Leary points out another type of misinformation. In this instance it’s a complete misrepresentation of the views of Cardinal Schönborn about evolution, as well as that of the Catholic church.

Briefly, the Catholic Church has come out swinging in recent years AGAINST Darwinism, which is precisely the “evolution” that Rosengarten is talking about.
Here’s what the Pope now distributes on prayer cards hawked all over Rome:

We are not some casual and meaningless product of evolution. Each of us is the result of a thought of God. Each of us is willed, each of us is loved, each of us is necessary.

So all over the world, people will remind themselves of anti-Darwinism every day.

In an e-mail O’Leary added:

“Any claim that the Catholic Church “supports evolution” that OMITS the fact that the Catholic Church DOES NOT support Darwinian evolution – which is precisely the controversial type taught in many American textbooks and school systems – is misleading.

That is like saying that the Catholic Church “supports abortion” because it sanctions a doctor acting to save the life of a pregnant mother in the rare case where both mother and child are doomed, but mother may be saved by actions that increase risk for the doomed child. No reasonable person would say that the Catholic Church “supports abortion” in the normal way we use the English language, on account of this very unusual exception.

Similarly, no reasonable person should say that the Catholic Church “supports evolution” without making clear that it specifically does not support Darwinism, as it is taught, nay often preached, and learned in North American education systems today. “
