My apologies: In our zest in reporting that Stephen Meyer’s new book, Darwin’s Doubt: The Explosive Origin of Animal Life and the Case for Intelligent Design, is #7 on the New York Times nonfiction bestseller list that came out yesterday, we neglected to mention that it’s #4 on the Los Angeles Times nonfiction list. By the oversight, we meant no disrespect to the West Coast.

As an aside, though, in contrast to the NYT‘s factual description of the book, note the interestingly tendentious summary of the contents given by the LAT:

Darwin’s Doubt
Stephen C. Meyer
The mystery surrounding the “Cambrian explosion:” the discovery of animal fossils whose ancestors have yet to be found.

With the scare quotes, they appear to be calling into question the reality of the Cambrian event, while in the second phrase the discovery of ancestors for the Cambrian animals seems to be assumed as something that hasn’t happened yet but is bound to do so sooner or later. This is a new one for me: a thumbnail-size review-by-insinuation, right there in the bestseller list.
